Notes will always check the password on the local ID file - however, your administrator can activate the Password Checking feature of Domino.

What that will do is have the user's mail server maintain a hash of the password, which is updated when the password is changed on the ID file. Thus, if someone does run off with a copy, once it's been changed, the ID is no longer good for accessing servers.

(Note - I'm not an admin myself, but that's how I understand how it works.)
